New Books by NER Authors

It’s been a great publication month for NER authors. New books this month include the book of essays How to Make a Slave by Jerald Walker, finalist for the 2020 National Book Award in Nonfiction; the debut memoir Lightning Flowers from Katherine E. Standefer; a nonfiction personal account of Syrian refugee camps from Steven Heighton; and a book of poetry written by Yang Jian and translated by Fiona Sze-Lorrain. Also in poetry, November brought a new collection by Jessica Gigot, an NER poetry submissions reader, and collections by both Kazim Ali and John Kinsella, both frequent NER authors.

From the publisher: In Poetry and Time, [Max] Neumann’s haunting images are accompanied by a lyrical and penetrating text from poet Joachim Sartorius, who notes that a certain silence is at the very heart of poems, stating: “They know what it is they do, but do not say it.” Exploring this mystery, he considers examples from Dickinson, Rilke, and Shakespeare, among others, and examines the realities of transience and mortality at the center of poems’ reasons for being, their urge to form their own reality and abolish time while being inextricably bound to time. Alexander Booth is a writer and translator living in Berlin. A recipient of a PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grant for his translations of Lutz Seiler’s in field latin (Seagull Books, 2016), he has also published his own poems and other translations in numerous print and online journals. His poem “The Interview” was featured on National Public Radio’s The Story, and after the 2004 World Series he read his poem “Winning the Lunar Eclipse” on Boston’s ABC Channel 5. John Kinsella is a prolific writer and author of over 25 books, and has published poems in literary journals internationally and has received a number of literary awards, including a Young Australian Creative Fellowship and a two-year Fellowship from the Literature Fund of the Australia Council. We see its peak smoking like a vast

The furrows that its volume compresses,

Auguste Lacaussade (1815–1897) was born on the French Indian Ocean possession of Bourbon, later named Ile de la Réunion. He published his first volume of poems in 1839, Les Salaziennes, followed by Poèmes et Paysages (1852), and Les Épaves (1861).

John Kinsella’s most recent books include the poetry collection Jam Tree Gully (W. W. Norton, 2012) and the collaborative work Redstart, with Forrest Gander (Iowa University Press, 2012). He is a Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge University, and a Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia.
