Student performers for NER Out Loud, 2019
Middlebury students can get involved in the New England Review in various ways throughout the year. Please see below for details about our internships, discussion group, student-produced podcast, and events. Read about our current and past interns in our “Meet the Interns” and “Where Are They Now” interview series.
Internships
New England Review internships offer current Middlebury students valuable experience in arts administration, editorial work, podcast production, marketing and publicity, and more. We encourage interested students to review the descriptions below before applying:
Fall and spring semester interns perform a variety of tasks related to the quarterly print publication and website, including creating posts in WordPress, proofreading and fact-checking texts, assistance with events, editing video and audio, and other duties as assigned. (Paid position, four hours a week, apply on Workable.)
Summer interns work on special projects, to be determined each year based on need and interest. For instance, they may focus on producing the NER Out Loud podcast or work on a research project. They will also assist with social media and event planning, while also performing a variety of tasks related to the quarterly print publication and website. There will be some administrative office work, but also lots of room for creativity for students who are interested in contemporary literature. (Paid position, fifteen hours a week, apply on Workable.)
Winter editorial interns focus on various editorial aspects of New England Review, a quarterly literary journal published by Middlebury College. Interns will read and evaluate manuscripts submitted to the magazine and will write up readers’ reports for their assigned submissions. They’ll have a chance to discuss these submissions with various members of the NER staff and with other student interns. They’ll also learn the basics of copyediting and the Chicago Manual of Style by working with texts for the magazine. This is not a paid position but can be taken for credit, with approval from an academic advisor. (Apply on Handshake.)
Podcast producer is a part-time semester-long or summer position that gives Middlebury students a chance to create one episode of the NER Out Loud podcast. The podcast producer is responsible for recording, editing, and producing one episode of the podcast in consultation with the New England Review staff. This temporary, gift-funded position is ideal for a student interested in contemporary literature to gain hands-on experience in creating a polished podcast for the NER Out Loud series. (Paid position, up to forty hours, apply on Workable.)
Please note that these positions come and go on Workable and Handshake as they are available. If you’d like to be added to a list to be alerted when they go live, please email nereview@middlebury.edu.

Reading Group
Students in our reading group read and evaluate manuscripts that are submitted to the New England Review for possible publication. Participants are assigned five or six manuscripts in a given genre (poetry, fiction, or nonfiction) and then they meet with NER editorial staff on Zoom to discuss them and determine which, if any, we might like to publish in the New England Review. We meet and talk about a batch of submissions approximately every other week, during fall and spring semesters as well as summer, at whatever time we find to be most convenient for the group.

NER Out Loud
NER Out Loud is a collaboration of the New England Review, Middlebury’s Mahaney Arts Center, and Oratory Now. In the tradition of NPR’s “Selected Shorts,” Middlebury student actors read selections from the New England Review in a live performance, lending their voices to the work on the page and bringing it to life for an audience of students, faculty, and community members. Each year the event also features students reading their own work in a “S’More Readings” reception.
